Mustachudos, Honey Nut Cookies

This little ball shaped cookie is a Sephardic classic.  Every Nona made these.  They are perfect for Passover or any other time of year.  If you like the taste of nuts and honey, you will love these.

1 and 1/2 cup pecans or walnuts, coarsely ground

1 and 1/2 cup blanched almonds, coarsely ground

1/ 2 cup sugar

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon cloves

1 tablespoon honey

1 egg

Preheat the oven to 400º.  Combine all the ingredients in one bowl and stir with a wooden spoon.  When the dough becomes all moist and sticky, it is ready.  Using your hands, form the sticky dough into walnut size balls or triangles, flatten a little bit.  Place the balls on a parchment lined cookie sheet.  Bake the mustachudos for about 7 minutes, or until done. Watch them carefully as they burn easily.  Sprinkle with powdered sugar to serve. Hi Linda,

I love your blog, it’s so wondeful to find Sephardic recipes! We make mustachudos slightly differently using raw nuts and orange zest and juice, I will try your recipe today.

Oh that sounds really good, I love orange zest in anything! Thanks for taking a look. Linda

These look so dee-lish, that I’m definitely going to make some this weekend. I think I might even get ambitious and experimental, and make two batches. One your way, Linda, and one the way Megi suggested, with orange zest and juice (I love anything with orange zest, too – and coconuts – remember my Tunisian Orange Cake?). Thanks for this recipe, Linda (and Megi’s too).

Thanks very much, Megi. I’ll definitely go the website (yours?) and try out your recipe as well as Linda’s. I had every intention of doing just that, but these past couple of weeks have been difficult – from a car accident I got into (nothing serious, except the awful damage to my car which my insurance company won’t compensate me for) and one of my favourite aunts losing her very brave seven year battle with ovarian cancer, leaving me very emotionally fragile, and not in a proper frame of mind to experiment with baking, as good as these recipes sound.

Thanks again, and when I return to my kitchen to bake once again (hopefully sooner rather than later), I will let you know how my attempt at mustachudos turned out.
